Iñigo spoke to us about travellers. For him and the team, it doesn’t matter where you are from or why you flee. Their work is informed by the ethos that everyone has the right to receive quality medical treatment, whether you are a local or a refugee.
Iñigo is the coordinator of Salvamento Maritimo Humanitario (SMH), a team of medical volunteers, initially involved in search and research operations off the coast of Chios and later also providing medical assistance in Souda and Vial camps. Their commitment to equality, social justice and providing the best care possible has earned them the trust and respect of fellow volunteers and refugees. It has also earned them the ire of authorities and international organisations on the island. Their attempt to set up a medical clinic in Chios town that would serve both refugees and the local population was abandoned following opposition from the municipality and the far-right.
