In December 2015, Nick left his job as a Management Consultant to go volunteer in the Calais ‘Jungle’, France. Almost two years later, he is still involved in the solidarity response. After months of coordinating nightly boat landings, in May 2016 he founded the first refugee school and youth centre on Chios together with several friends from BeAwareAndShare (BAAS).

As we enter the school courtyard, Nick takes us on a tour of the school – a unique space of creativity, peace, and hope only minutes away from Souda camp. As long as Greek schools on the islands remain shut for refugee children, Nick has committed to leading the fight for their right to education on Chios and beyond.

Following the recent withdrawal of EU funding for the school, Nick and the BAAS team are fundraising money to ensure the continuation of the largest education project that provides informal education to refugee children on the island.
